The Savvy Gourmet

With the playful re-use of a 1910 building that once housed donkey stables for the old fire house next door, Line 58 provided Savvy Gourmet with visual branding for everything from packaging, t-shirts, and shopping bags to facade, signage, fixtures, and furnishings. The idea was to embody the spirit of modern New Orleans, utilizing subtle humor wherever possible, but eschewing fleurs-de-lis, gaslamps, and trumpets.

Like many start-up ventures, The Savvy Gourmet had lots of ideas about what it could be. Line 58 helped the entrepreneurial owners capture their vision and focus the brand. The brand created captured a modern aesthetic with hand-made flavor. Custom typography and carefully manipulated illustrations created a strong and memorable brand.

"Savvy is as Savvy Does" became the mantra of our design process. In a loft-like, brick-enclosed space, modern forms mix with vernacular materials and details: barge-board siding, exposed steel and concrete, and authentic ceramic metal signage. The social interaction of the patrons--seen as a vital facet of a good meal--was always considered in the design process. The cooking classroom is visible in the distance.

The modest work-a-day exterior provides a frame for Savvy's retail space. Lively graphics proclaim the core elements of the store: Cookware, Classes, and Catering

The basic look for Savvy showed up first in cards and other business papers, ultimately providing the guiding sensibility for the retail store a year later.

Line 58 managed a variety of vendors to produce all the pieces of the puzzle: everything from stunning shopping bags to custom printed butcher paper for their cafe tables.

After cutting up veggies (and usually generally cutting up), "pupils" gather at an amazing twenty-five-foot dining table with a good glass of wine to enjoy the delicious results of their efforts. Customized, up-dateable calendars lure them to the next class.

Today's "lecture" is delivered at the heart of the classroom--a giant twelve-seat island in the open kitchen. While equipment is state-of-the-art, the atmosphere never intimidates.

Line 58 collaborated with The Savvy Gourmet and their architect to craft a branded store and demonstration cooking kitchen. Line 58 then designed and oversaw fabrication and installation of custom enamel steel signs, retail banners, point-of-purchase materials, and building signage.
